Shipping a vehicle during the colder months takes a little more planning—but that’s where we come in. At Finish Line Logistics, we make vehicle transport easy, no matter the season. If you're preparing to ship a car this winter, here are some important things to keep in mind to ensure your experience is smooth, safe, and stress-free.
1. Expect Seasonal Rate Adjustments
As winter settles in, weather conditions can reduce the number of carriers on the road and extend delivery timelines. That can lead to price changes across the industry. At Finish Line Logistics, we monitor seasonal trends closely and communicate any expected price shifts upfront so you're never caught off guard.
We recommend building in a 15-20% cushion to your transport budget during the winter to account for higher demand, possible route detours, or longer transit times. And of course, we always shop the best carrier options for your route and vehicle type.
2. Flexibility Helps Beat Winter Delays
Shipping around the holidays or during stormy weather? Flexibility goes a long way. Carrier availability can drop in December and January, especially around Christmas and New Year’s, and weather-related delays are common.
When you ship with Finish Line Logistics, we encourage you to book at least 1 to 2 weeks in advance and allow a few extra days on either side of your preferred pickup and delivery windows. We'll keep you updated every step of the way and help adjust timing if weather or road conditions shift.
3. Open vs. Enclosed Transport: Which is Right for You?
Open transport is the most popular and affordable option—but in winter, it leaves your vehicle exposed to rain, snow, and road salt. For standard daily drivers, that may be fine, but if you're shipping a classic, exotic, or modified vehicle, enclosed transport offers peace of mind and full protection from the elements.
Not sure which is best for your vehicle and route? Finish Line Logistics can help you compare your options and decide what makes the most sense for your situation and budget.
4. Check the Weather—and Let Us Do the Same
We always monitor the route for you, but it’s a good idea to check local weather at both your pickup and delivery points. If snowstorms, icy roads, or freezing temperatures are expected, it could affect delivery times or the route your driver takes.
Our team keeps communication open before and during your shipment. If there’s ever a delay due to weather, we’ll keep you informed with updates so you’re never left wondering where your vehicle is.
5. Prep Your Vehicle for Cold Weather Transport
Before pickup, take a few minutes to prepare your car for transport:
Wash it and take photos of all four sides (we recommend customers take their own photos in addition to the driver’s).
Remove personal items and toll tags.
Top off fluids, especially antifreeze and windshield washer fluid.
Make sure tires are properly inflated and the battery is charged.
When you ship with Finish Line Logistics, we walk you through all of these steps—plus provide inspection documentation at pickup and delivery to give you confidence and peace of mind.
