Car Shipping Do's and Don'ts

Updated: Oct 9, 2022

Tips to Prepare for Auto Transport.

At some point in your lifetime, you may be in need of auto transport services. Auto transport is a great choice for getting your car from one location to another and can save you time, money, and effort. No matter the reason you need to ship your vehicle, having a plan makes the shipping process so much easier and that much better.

To ensure that your future car transport goes as smooth as possible, here is a short list of car shipping Do’s and Don’ts:

DO Be clear about your needs and goals regarding car shipping and make sure your transport agent knows.

It’s easy to get caught up with the ideal price and quality but if no one is clear about YOUR shipping needs and goals, it will be harder to assess the right shipping option for you. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your shipment you should ask them when you speak with your car transport agent. Be sure to have an in depth conversation with your transport agent so they can personalize the shipping process for you.

DO Go For Quality Over Price

Car transport rates vary depending on a variety of factors, including distance, time of year, type of vehicle, and requested services. While the cheapest price may seem intriguing, remember that you get what you pay for. We may not be the lowest price in the industry, but we believe in quality and value over price. The cheapest option may not be the best, and you don't want to regret paying a lower price and getting less than great service.

DO Double Check Insurance Coverage

Any company that transports vehicles must have the appropriate insurance coverage, in case any incidences were to occur. You are not required to purchase any special insurance before the transportation of your car, however, we still recommend you check with your own auto insurance company to see what they cover during transit. Your assigned transport agent will request a copy of the insurance policy from the auto transport company that is chosen to transport your vehicle. It is a good idea to verify with your transport agent that the company assigned to transport your vehicle is fully insured.

"Remember that you get what you pay for."

DON'T wait until the last minute to book your car transport.

Carriers usually book their shipment loads a few days to a week in advance. Booking last minute can increase your shipping rate, therefore, it is important to give your transport agent time to find the right transporter that suits your needs and to negotiate a good shipping rate for you. We recommend booking at least two weeks before your 'First Available Ship Date.' The more advance notice you give us, the higher quality service you receive.

DON’T Skip Out On Doing Research

It is important that you find a company that you can trust to ship your car to its destination. This is why research is critical. At Finish Line Logistics, we look for an auto transport company that provides quality services that meet your needs. While our agents do thorough research on the company you are matched with, we encourage you to dedicate some time to research the company before committing to transport.

DON'T plan to ship personal items in your vehicle without consulting with your transport agent.

Carriers do not accept personal items in the vehicles unless we mention them upon confirming the transport. Therefore, before putting anything inside the vehicle, you should first confirm with your transport agent if your personal items can be shipped in your vehicle. DON’T attempt to transport anything illegal within the car. Vehicles will be inspected at state lines, and in addition to a prohibition on household items, other items including (but not limited to) firearms, animals, and narcotics are prohibited.
